Black Cat Appreciation Month
|
October is Black Cat Appreciation month!
Black cats are less likely to be adopted than any other color. These perfectly spooky babies are at the top of our minds this month, so here are some fun facts!
1. Much like humans, black cats' fur can lighten or "rust" if they spend a lot of time outside!
2. The "bombay" cat is the only type of cat that can be truly "all black"--down to their paw pads and whiskers!
3. Black cats most commonly have yellow eyes, but are known to have green, copper, orange, or hazel eyes. Black cats can very rarely possess blue eyes, but this sometimes points to a genetic mutation that can lead to health issues.

Simon first came to us through TNR, but our team had quickly realized that this little guy was way too friendly and sick for him to return outside.
Simon was then temporarily fostered by one of our Veterinary Technician Assistants, Camme, where his personality quickly blossomed. It's safe to say that we all fell in love.
Recently, Simon was dropped off at Hearts Alive Cat Cafe to find his furrever family. We hear that he's getting along with the other cats just fine, and he's getting his daily dose of attention!

WOW! We want to thank each and every one of you who have donated to our "Mewnikin" fundraiser.
"What's a Mewnikin?"
The "mewnikin" is our fun nickname for Heaven Can Wait's resident feline medical manikin. Because of animal-lovers like you, we were able to raise over $1,500.
And of course, we have to thank Miss Catty for her contribution to the fundraiser. She took time out of her very busy schedule to answer questions and give advice to the generous donors who gave $10 or more to the fund.

Injuries and Amputations: The Reality of Community Cats
|
Injuries and illnesses are more common than not in the lives of community cats. Life after injury for each cat depends on how friendly the cat is, how well they adjust, and how serious the injury is.
After a thorough exam of this community cat, our veterinarians saw an injury to their tail to be very severe and prone to infection. The best way to help this little one was with a tail amputation.
After spending an appropriate amount of time healing indoors, he was re-released into his colony, where his caretaker will keep a close eye on him.
This kind of heartbreaking situation is just what our Community Cat Action Fund was created for. If you'd like to help support community cats like this one, consider donating today.

Former Pup on Parole Makes the News!
|
You may remember Cookie the therapy poodle, a graduate from our former "Pups on Parole" program 6 years ago. Cookie is now off doing amazing things, and has recently been featured on the news with her mom!
Lately, she's been a peaceful companion to patients at Southwest Medical Hospice. Cookie provides a great service for our community, and is able to comfort people during very difficult times. We couldn't be more proud of her!
